Leonard Pitts Jr. is a singularly unusual and reliable columnist. He has personal biases, and tells you what they are before going on to ignore them, providing a balanced view of whatever topic he presents. You may disagree with his position, but you will have to admit his conclusions are reasonable and positive. Pitts was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in 1992, won the 2004 Pulitzer Prize for commentary. He is a five-time recipient of the National Headliners Award. In 2001, he received the American Society of Newspaper Editors Award For Commentary Writing and was named Feature of the Year Columnist by Editor and Publisher magazine.
